Malakut (Noun): Divine kingdom, unseen world of angels or spirits, a realm close to God.
Golliwog (Noun): Black rag doll with exaggerated features and colorful clothing, formerly popular as a children's toy in Britain and Australia, today regarded as a racial slur towards black people.
Returning after their 2018 debut A Prism Inside Your Pregnant Mind, Australian hip-hop / spoken word / electronic duo Doublethnk Prism will release their sophomore album on November 18, 2022. The work of spoken-word artist Splodge and multi- instrumentalist producer Alyian, Malakut Golliwog , released via Stock Records features guest artists Mathas, Hayley Beth, Injured Ninja and Traec and will be available on LP and digital.
In the works for almost three years, delayed due to near-fatal health troubles, starting new families, pandemics and side projects, Malakut Golliwog is sprawling record that unpacks Splodge’s identity as a black man growing up in a fiercely white society, looking at the impact of systemic racism in his home country of England and the similar issues faced living in Australia, a country with a complex cultural history.
Crafted by producer Steven Alyian in his Galaxial Acid studio deep in the urban enclave of Perth City, the album blends raw analog synths with mangled samples from the weirdest reaches of history in a sonic pastiche that is brutal and relentless in its delivery of social-political dance floor destroyers.
Teased as a ‘Golliwog’ as a young boy, join Marcus John aka Spoldge as he transforms into the Malakut Golliwog, a powerful being that emerges from the darkness of the spirit world, and lays our insecurities bare for all to see in a cathartic exploration of what it means to be a black man in modern society. Be warned, he holds nothing back.
The album artwork features a genuine photo of members of Alyian’s family from the 1960’s, taken in Wittenoom, Western Australia - a mining town that was doomed to closure due to the reckless mining of blue asbestos that killed many of the residents and is now the largest contaminated site in the southern hemisphere.
